The 2023 Sam Spiegel Film Lab Emerging Filmmaker Award in the amount of $20,000, in contribution of the “Bracha” fund, was awarded to the film Checkpoints by Rita Borodiyanski. Producer: Osnat Saraga, Israel.

The film depicts the story of a young woman who chooses to serve in the IDF’s Border Patrol Unit stationed in Tul-Karem, in order to receive a grant from the army, and escape a destructive relationship. The reasoning of the jury states that “This is an energetic story about female empowerment and becoming free. It brings to the screen the story of a woman from a challenging background, who manages to make the best of her situation, in a political reality that does not offer her many options.”
