In the haunting stillness of the Judean Desert, two women face the ghosts of their past in “Fireflies,” a new Israeli thriller where secrets buried in salt and sand refuse to stay hidden.

A new Israeli series, Fireflies, premiered this week on HOT, blending suspense, mystery, and personal drama against the stunning backdrop of the Judean Desert. The eight-episode show, set near the Dead Sea, follows two women whose shared past resurfaces to haunt them.

The story begins with a flood that unearths old landmines and disrupts a small local community. A mysterious phenomenon soon threatens the residents, unearthing buried secrets. At the heart of the drama are Dekla (Dana Ivgy), a local policewoman striving to restore calm, and Mimi (Ninet Tayeb), a police explosives expert who has never integrated into any community. Their reunion after 20 years forces them to confront old traumas they tried to forget.

Created by Shachar Magen, known for Virgins and the novel The Land of Monasteries on which the series is based, and directed by Taufiq Abu Wael, who previously helmed The Boys, Fireflies combines literary vision with sensitive direction, crafting a unique blend of desert realism and contemporary mystery. The cast, led by Ninet Tayeb and Dana Ivgy, includes Amir Khoury, Lia Elalouf, Rotem Keinan, Tal Tirangel, and Sigalit Fuchs.

Produced by Ananey Studios under Paramount, the series boasts high production quality and is slated for international release on Paramount+ later this year. Filmed in the Dead Sea region, the stark and beautiful desert landscape serves as a near-character in the story, enhancing its tense atmosphere.

Fireflies promises to be one of the year’s most compelling Israeli series, merging gripping mystery with deep personal drama. It airs on HOT and NEXT TV, offering a blend of local and universal appeal for audiences and critics alike.
